Few people have shaken up the adrenaline-fuelled world of endurance motorsport quite like history-making Charlie Martin.
Charlie, a transgender competitor, caught the imagination of sports fans around the world not just with her breathtaking race skills but also shaking up a sport short of diversity and inclusion with her engaging style of activism which won her an impressive social media following.
Born in Leicester, Charlie drove her way into the history books in 2020 by competing in one of motor racing’s toughest endurance races – the ADAC TOTAL 24 Nürburgring-Rennen.
Her incredible achievement made headlines around the world and propelled her story onto national TV and international publications.
Charlie’s extraordinary passion for the sport began back in 2006 with the the Hillclimb Leaders Championship racing a Peugeot 205. But she was soon racing alongside French racer Nicolas Schatz on the Bugatti Circuit.
The Ginetta GT5 Challenge, Michelin Le Mans Cup, German VLN Championship followed before Britcar came calling. Charlie signed to race in 2020 with Praga to take part in the 2021 Britcar Endurance Championship, racing their R1 Mk5 prototype car.
Just months later she became the first transgender driver to be affiliated with FIA Formula E.
Charlie’s influence extends way beyond the race track and as a speaker and influencer she has changed the way thousands of people think about LGBTQI+ issues.
She was named the first Stonewall Sports Champion by Europe’s leading LGBTQI+ charity and works with Mermaids – a charity and advocacy organisation that supports gender variant and transgender youth.
Charlie devotes time to Athlete Ally, a nonprofit LGBTQI+ athletic advocacy group, and Racing Pride, for LGBTQI+ people and allies who are either in, or are interested in, motorsport and the automotive industry.
She also caught the attention of tens of thousands of people on social media as an active vlogger on her growing YouTube Channel.
Charlie teamed up with vloggers Fox Fisher and Owl and My Genderation in the #TransAND campaign as well as partnering with Childline.
And if she looks familiar, you may recognise her from ITV’s hit Saturday night show Ninja Warrior UK watched by more more than 3 million viewers.
In 2021, British Vogue included Charlie in the Vogue 25, a celebration of inspirational woman shaping 2021 & beyond.
She has previously been shortlisted for awards including British LGBT Awards: 2020 Sports Personality of the year and DIVA Magazine: Sports Star.
